Improvement Quality Of Learning Process in SMK N 1 Mentawai Islands Through The Community Service Program

Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK) is a Vocational High School that targets the formation of character and skills for its graduates. The learning system in SMK that includes practical materials makes SMK graduates ready to use and capable and create jobs. So that the targeted SMK graduates are able to contribute to the local economy.

The very contradictory conditions we encountered at SMK N 1 Mentawai Islands. Established since 2014, SMK N 1 Mentawai Islands is still equipped with limited learning support equipment. From the discussion we had with the only TKR teacher at SMK N 1 Mentawai Islands, Mr. Andrivo, S.Pd, M.T, he said that so far the PBM practice has only been done by watching videos due to the limited equipment and practice simulators available at the school. for them to practice private vehicles. Students/Teachers provide their vehicles to be used as practice media. Of course, this condition is still not optimal because the work done tends to be light work which does not adequately represent the subject matter of the Department.

This condition is certainly not very good considering that the output of SMK students is skills that should be obtained through a structured and systematic practicum process.

Through the PKM program, our Automotive Engineering Department team carries out community service activities at SMK N 1 Mentawai Islands. This activity targets the manufacture of motorcycle engine stands as a medium for student practice. The engine stand was then used as a practicum medium for students of SMK N 1 Mentawai Islands. The engine stand is made as simple as possible so that it is easy for students to understand.

In PKM activities, our service team conducted Overhoul training for SMK N Mentawai students. We and our team strive so that the technical practicum can be carried out as ideally as possible, equipped with a job sheet and preceded by the provision of material first. In the implementation of this activity, the enthusiasm of the students of SMK N 1 Mentawai Islands in participating in the activity was very evident because they could immediately do direct practice related to the material provided which they had not been able to do so far.

We, the PKM team from the Automotive Engineering Department, UNP, hope that this engine stand will be able to be used properly by teachers and students of SMK N 1 Mentawai Islands in carrying out PBM activities so that the target for increasing the competence of graduates can be obtained. At the end of the activity we also handed over the manual book engine stand as a complete guide for the teacher in teaching.
