Padang State University is one of the leading state universities in West Sumatra Province. The contribution of Padang State University is very much needed in building the quality of human resources and education in the West Sumatra region. One form of UNP’s real contribution to regional development is Community Service activities. Through community service activities, Padang State University is present at problem points in the community. This activity focuses on problem solving that is present in the community.

The Automotive Engineering Department through the PKM program facilitated by LP2m UNP held training for students of SMK N 1 Mentawai Islands with the matter of trouble shooting ignition systems. The community service team chose SMK N 1 Mentawai Islands because we found a number of problems in the PBM process in SMK N 1 Mentawai Islands. From the results of the survey we conducted, information was obtained that there was no practicum media at SMK N 1 Mentawai Islands. This condition certainly has an impact on PBM in SMK N 1 Mentawai Islands.

The journey to the Mentawai Islands is taken by sea. The team traveled for 3 hours to get to the capital city of the Mentawai Islands Regency, Tua Pejat. The journey to SMK N 1 Mentawai Islands continues to the land route which is taken for 3 hours. The PKM team was welcomed by the teacher council of SMK N 1 Mentawai Islands as well as a brief discussion related to technical community service activities the next day.

The use of practicum media makes the training conditions very conducive. Participants seemed enthusiastic in doing the practicum and actively asked questions during the activity. The training activities are also equipped with modules and manual book engines that are used to make it easier for participants to understand the conditions and specifications of the engines used. At the end of the activity, the team conducted an evaluation in the form of a practical exam and a written exam. This is done to measure the level of mastery of the participants regarding the material provided.
