Increasing Student Entrepreneurship Through Utilization of Seashells in Producing Products of Sale Value

The Community Partnership Program (PKM) is a compulsory program carried out by the Padang State University (UNP) academic community every year. This program is a form of dedication from the campus to the community towards the fields of knowledge possessed by lecturers in improving the welfare of the community and in supporting government programs. The government’s program for Vocational High School (SMK) alumni is to prepare superior SMK graduates in the fields of knowledge, skills, and have the courage to open their own business opportunities. The PKM team chaired by Irma Yulia Basri, S.Pd, M.Eng tries to realize government programs through training student skills in improving the entrepreneurial spirit of SMKN 1 Koto Tarusan XI Pesisir Selatan students.

The training program was held at SMKN 1 Koto XI Tarusan Kenagarian Batu Hampar, Koto XI Tarusan District, Pesisir Selatan Regency from 02 to 05 August 2019. This activity was immediately opened by Mr. Yasrizon, M.Pd as the Principal of SMKN 1 Tarusan.

The training participants consisted of 18 Class XII students, and were accompanied by 3 teachers, while the campus consisted of 6 teams involving lecturers, technicians and students. The product produced in this PKM activity is a patio lamp decorated with shells. The choice of shells as decorative light ornaments is because the south coast is close to the beach, especially the Batu Kalang beach on the South Coast, where there are many shells and other marine biota that can be used as valuable handicraft products.

The process of making decorative lamps with clam shells begins with cutting 25 cm long 8 inch pipe. The paralon was then drilled to make the position of the light that would come out, then the stecker lamp holder made of wood and iron for the porch lamp was prepared.

The second process is sandpaper to smooth the surface of the paralon, wood and iron, then proceed with the process of painting these materials.

The painting process is carried out in 2 stages, namely the process of applying primer and the painting process with a predetermined color. The painting technique was demonstrated by instructor Nuzul Hidayat, S.Pd, M.T and a team of community service assistants. Painting techniques that don’t fit will result in an uneven paint surface and waste of paint.

The paralon, which has been perfectly painted, is decorated with shells from the coastal marine biota of Pesisir Selatan. The decoration model is completely left to the trainees’ imagination. The shells are attached to the gutter using wax glue. This glue is very cheap and very easy to obtain in the market, so that trainees who are interested in developing their work do not experience this obstacle.

Installing a lamp stecker with a cable is the final stage of the process of making a patio decorative lamp by utilizing a paralon and shells. From the observations of the community service implementation team, even though the trainees are from the engineering field, there are still some trainees who have not been able to install cables and checkers neatly and correctly, so that during the trial test there was a short circuit due to the two checker terminals connected to each other with cables. The experience gained by the trainees was not only able to decorate the lights, but also to increase their knowledge in the field of electricity.

The trainees’ enthusiasm during the activity was very high, this could be seen from their persistence and thoroughness in producing better quality products. Each participant tries to show their best creations. From the survey conducted, the understanding of the concept of creating products with sale value to create one’s own job opportunities has increased. The entrepreneurial mindset that requires large capital has been surpassed by their ability to produce simple tools but they are worth selling and can be used as souvenirs in their area which is the center of marine tourism.

Community Partnership activities to train vocational school students in supporting government programs to improve the entrepreneurial spirit of SMKN 1 Koto XI Tarusan students have gone according to plan. This activity cannot be separated from the contribution of LP2M UNP Padang, and the partner schools. The school of SMKN 1 Koto XI Tarusan, especially the principal Mr. Yasrizon, M.Pd, and the representative of the Almes Gangga M.PdT curriculum, sincerely hopes that the collaboration between UNP and SMKN 1 Koto XI Tarusan can continue not only in the form of a service program, but also in the form of PLK teacher assistance for apprenticeships there, due to the lack of productive teachers in the SMK, especially for the areas of expertise in light vehicle engineering and motorcycle engineering.
